A
When you’re storing dowels, it’s important to do so in as stable an environment as possible.
Recently, McFeleey’s(TM) made the decision to move away from storing dowels in our own
warehouse and to use a top-notch U.S. manufacturer to ship these direct to you. Allow 2-3
weeks for delivery. To ensure package integrity, dowels do have package minimums that we
cannot waive or mix and match. McFeely’s(TM) dowels are manufactured using only high
grade Appalachian hardwoods, dried for months in a yard and fished on a kiln to a targeted
8% moisture. Dowels longer than 4” are custom made and not eligible for returns. Please
check your project specifications before ordering. Teak dowels are available- call for pricing.
All dowels are drop shipped from the supplier and shipping is based on the actual shipping
charge. Most ship UPS except the largest ones, which are marked with an asterisk and require
truck freight. Note: Wood prices are so volatile, these prices cannot be guaranteed. Prices are

Most woodworkers don’t give dowels much thought, until they go to use one and discover a) it isn’t straight, or b) it isn’t round. As hard
as it may be to believe, dowels are machined and sanded round at the time of manufacture. A dowel’s cellular structure causes it to
shrink and swell with changes in humidity, just like the lumber in a cabinet door. However, dowels are often required to fit into a hole,
and that’s where the trouble begins. Since they are round, dowels have equal proportions of edge grain and face grain do not absorb
moisture evenly, resulting in the oval dowels. Most of us have dealt with this at one time or another. (3rd bullet) Aliphatic resin (yellow

glue) contains water and causes the dowels to swell. This can work for or against you!
Top tips:
• Store dowels in as stable an environment as possible.
• Use dowels as soon after purchase as practical.
• Aliphatic resin (yellow glue) contains water and causes the dowels to swell − can work for or against you!
• If the dowel is too small, check the dowel diameter and the hole diameter. Run-out in drill presses and drill bits can cause oversized holes!
