WASHERS/LAG SCREWS
Heavy Duty Washers
A
These “Heavy Duty” hot-dip galvanized washers are not quite as “beefy” as our “Extra Thick”
stainless washers. They are ideal for use with hot-dip galvanized carriage bolts, hex-head cap
screws and lag bolts with pressure-treated materials.

Extra Thick Washers

Extra thickness prevents distortion

Ever wonder why bolted connections in pressure treated lumber loosen? The wood fibers
are not strong enough to prevent crushing. Standard washers are so thin that they deform as
the wood beneath them compresses over time, so the joints eventually loosen. The solution
is to distribute the load over a wider area. Use a washer “stiff” enough to avoid deformation
(tighten several times as the wood dries). These 1/8” thick, super duty stainless steel washers
won’t deflect and distort as common washer do. They’re available in an oversized diameter to
further help distribute clamping loads.

Fix sagging plaster!
Installing Lag Screws
Lag screws are made of unhardened steel (or stainless steel, which
is also unhardened but stronger than the mild steel used in standard
lags). That means that lag bolts are soft and can easily be over-torqued
and broken during installation. Worse yet, if such a thing is possible, is
that many users mistakenly think that because of their size compared
to standard screws, lag screws do not need pilot holes. Unfortunately,
the wedging action of a large-diameter lag screw will quickly split
most lumber! For best results, drill a pilot hole for the threads and a
clearance hole for the shank. Drill the pilot hole through both pieces at
one time for alignment, then enlarge the pilot hole to the clearancehole size in the piece being fastened..

Use these handy washers with any #8 flat-head screw to spread the load and pull the plaster
back against the lath. A special corrosion-resistant coating helps to prevent bleeding, and
four holes promote the base coat bond with the washer. Plain plaster washers are used for
most repairs. Use pronged washers with rigid foam insulation to prevent spinning during
installation. Washers are 1-1/4” dia. and measure about .024” thick (less than 1/32”). Use a #6
or #8 drywall screw – 1-5/8” L.
