The Square Drive Advantage
The Square Drive screw was developed in Canada in
1908 and has been used extensively by US-based
commercial furniture manufacturers, as well as the
mobile home industry, since the 1950s. It’s become
the preferred drive type for woodworkers worldwide,
and McFeely’s is proud to have supplied small cabinet
shops and hobbyists for over 35 years!
Here are three reasons to give Square Drive a try:
1. Maximum driving torque, which reduces driver bit “cam-out”
You’ll always get maximum torque transfer from the driver, allowing you to pull
uncooperative joints tight on the first try! The screws fit the bit so tightly that “camout” is virtually eliminated. Unlike when you use a Phillips driver, you won’t have to
worry about scratching your masterpiece!

Driver Bit Sizes
Square Drive (and “Combo” Square Drive) screws are designed so that the driver bits fit
snugly into the recess. If they don’t, you’re probably using the wrong driver bit.
As a guide, our Square Drive screws use the following driver bit sizes, except as noted
within the catalog. (In special cases, a non-standard recess is used. For instance, #7 and
#8 trim-head screws normally have a #1 recess in order to avoid breakage problems
with the undersized head).
Those color bars you see in the driver bit guide below are repeated in the screw price
chart so it’s easy to match the driver bit to the screw.
Finally, there are really only two sizes of driver bits in common usage: #1 and #2 Square.
They fit 90% of the screws you are likely to use − screw sizes #6, #8, and #10. Other bits
fit screws designed for rather specialized applications. In fact, the #4 driver bit is such a
rare beast that it is virtually manufactured to order. We don’t carry screws to fit the bit,
but we do carry the bit!
Driver Bit Color Codes
Driver bits wear out when they “spin” in the screw recess, rounding off their corners
and eventually making them useless. Square Drive screws are less prone to
“spinning,” which helps prolong the life of your driver bits. Plus, only two driver sizes
are required to fit most common Square Drive screws. Oh yeah, did we mention that
they last longer, too?
3. Strength, Strength, Strength!
These screws were engineered to meet the demanding requirements of the
furniture manufacturing industry. Stronger than steel, McFeely’s® screws are heattreated to reduce breakage, resulting in higher quality screws than found in most
local hardware and big box stores. Why use inferior screws when you can use what
the professionals use?
