Band Saw Blade Basics
Blade Width: Whether you’re cutting curves or ripping and resawing lumber, you’ll
get the best cut when you use the widest possible blade. But what is the widest possible blade? The table below lists the minimum curve radius each blade size is able
to cut.Tooth Style: “Regular” tooth blades are a general-purpose confiration designed
for contour sawing and cut-off work. “Skip” tooth blades are designed for resawing
and ripping of thick materials. “Hook” tooth blades have extra-wide gullets for rapid
cutting of solid hard/soft woods and multiple layers. Omitting every other tooth lets
the blade hold more chips between teeth, resulting in a faster, less demanding cut.
Cut quality is reduced, however, since fewer teeth actually make the cut..

Most “hobby” blades are stamped from pre-tempered spring steel that is at its final hardness,
so the blade must be relatively thin. That makes it more likely to wander in the cut unless
the tension is outrageously high, eventually leading to upper-wheel axle failure. Olson AllPro PGT blades are precision ground for uniform tooth settings, then induction-hardened
to Rc 64-65, so they start sharp and stay sharp longer. The tooth-hardening process leaves
the back with the needed flexibility (Rc 45) to avoid early fatigue breakage and the stiffness
to maintain a straight cut in thick material. The Hook style tooth provides excellent chip
evacuation for faster cutting. The computer-controlled Raker tooth setting results in
straighter, more-precise cuts with less waste. The Regular/standard tooth has equally
spaced teeth in narrow bands for wood, plastic and non-ferrous metals in general cutting
applications. For best results, make sure your saw is tuned up first, or you won’t be able to
tell how good a blade this really is! An 80” blade fits: All Sears Craftsmen 12” Tilting Table
or Tilting Head Band Saws except Models 22412 (91”) and 22400 (89-1/2”). The 82” blade fits:
12” Delta 28-190 and 12” Jet models. The 93-1/2” blade fits: Most 14” Delta/Rockwell, Jet,
Rikon, Sears Craftsmen, Steel City 50100, Reliant, Enlon, Star, Bridgewood, Woodtek, General.
The 105” blade fits: Most 14” band saws with Riser Block Extension such as Delta/Rockwell,
Jet, Rikon, Sears Craftsman, Reliant, Enlon, Star, Bridgewood, Woodtek, General. Check your
manual before ordering.
